Steam does the damage from the outside in

Most hose specification concentrates on what is inside the tube, and in a mill the harder problem is often what is outside the cover. A line running near a steam leak or through a humid, hot section ages from the outside, and by the time the cover is cracking the reinforcement beneath it has already been exposed to moisture for months. Corrosion of the wire then finishes it. Where a run cannot be moved away from heat, sleeving and a cover compound chosen for external conditions is what extends its life, and both are cheaper than the unplanned stop.
