A boring machine cannot be pulled out for a repair, so maintenance happens in the tunnel, in confined space, during whatever window the excavation cycle allows. Under those conditions a failed assembly is not a component problem but a schedule problem, and the response is to change things before they fail rather than after. That requires knowing what is fitted, in what length, at what point in the machine — which is a labelling and records exercise as much as an engineering one. We tag and document assemblies against a machine list for exactly this kind of work.
