Supplying Switzerland, in detail

Why does a consignment to Switzerland carry two customs declarations?

Because Switzerland is surrounded by the EU customs union but outside it. A container discharged at Genoa or Rotterdam travels under EU transit bond — the T1, raised by the forwarder at the port of discharge — and the importer then makes a Swiss import declaration through the Federal Office for Customs at the border. It is the only European lane on our network that carries two customs files for the same goods.

What actually stops a truck at Chiasso or Basel?

A transit declaration and a Swiss entry that disagree on a description or a quantity. The sea leg to Genoa is predictable; the border is where a discrepancy surfaces, and it is a far more expensive place to resolve one than an office. We raise both declarations from the same invoice and packing list before the vessel sails, so the two files agree line for line.

When does a Swiss delivery come up the Rhine to Basel instead of over the Alps from Genoa?

When the site is in Basel or the north-west and the road leg is shorter that way. Genoa is the default — typically 24–32 days, sea and road combined, because it is much shorter out of Suez and the Alpine crossing is straightforward. Rotterdam and the Rhine corridor to Basel typically take 28–36 days, and we choose against the delivery town.

Does Switzerland accept a PED declaration, or is there a separate Swiss mark?

It accepts the European declaration: Switzerland recognises the European conformity framework for this equipment, so there is no separate national mark to obtain. For a hose assembly above the pressure-volume threshold in PED 2014/68/EU we issue the declaration of conformity as the assembler before dispatch, exactly as a member state would expect it. It travels with our Dubai Chamber-attested Certificate of Origin.

Can you supply to a tolerance tighter than the catalogue figure?

Tell us the tolerance and the standard it is written against at quotation, and we will say plainly whether the item holds it and what documentation comes with it. Swiss machinery and process plant often specify tighter than catalogues quote, and we would rather decline a line than ship to a nominal dimension. Material and test certificates come with the order where it calls for them.

How do you support planned hose changes on a tunnel boring machine underground?

By tagging and documenting each assembly against the machine list. A TBM cannot be pulled out for repair, so hoses are changed before they fail, in confined space and inside the excavation cycle. That only works if you know what is fitted, in what length and where on the machine. Send the machine list and we supply assemblies labelled to it, so the crew underground fits the right one first time.

Why does pumped-storage duty in the Valais wear hydraulics faster than a conventional dam?

Because the units change mode many times a day. A pumped-storage plant such as Nant de Drance switches between pumping and generating far more often than a conventional storage plant starts and stops, so governor, gate and valve hydraulics see many more pressure cycles. We specify hose and fittings for impulse life at that cycle count, from the plant’s existing assembly data, and confirm the document set at quotation.

Can hose for a Basel or Visp process plant be specified for the site’s cleaning regime?

Yes, and it should be. On chemical and pharmaceutical plant at Basel, Visp or Monthey a hose often fails from the cleaning cycle — hot caustic, steam or solvent flushes — rather than from the product. Tell us the product, the cleaning media, temperatures and frequency, and we confirm the lining and compound at quotation and say plainly where one is unsuitable. The document set for the line is confirmed at quotation too.

Can you supply steering and deck hydraulics for the passenger fleets on Swiss lakes?

Yes, to the vessel’s existing assembly data. Lake passenger fleets on Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne and Lake Zurich run steering, ramp and deck hydraulics through long summer seasons, so overhaul spares are best ordered on the 24–32 day Genoa lane well before the season. For a breakdown in service, air freight into Zürich typically takes 2–4 days. Rhine barge and port-crane hydraulics for Basel are supplied the same way.

Do you supply hose for the salt mines at Bex and the Rhine saltworks?

Yes. Salt mining and brine handling attack hydraulics through corrosion as much as wear, so we specify covers, fittings and plating for a saline atmosphere and dust-rated, high-cycle duty on the mining fleet. Tell us the machine, where the line runs and the cycle rate, and we quote to that rather than to a standard catalogue assembly.
