Supplying Jamaica, in detail

How many weeks should a Jamaican plant allow for a sea shipment from Dubai?

Typically 30–38 days by sea from dispatch for a full container from Jebel Ali through Suez and across the Atlantic to Kingston. LCL runs 36–48 days, consolidated and transhipped, which suits small mixed orders rather than an outage date. Air freight from DXB to Kingston takes 4–7 days with connections when a line is down and the plant cannot wait.

Can you supply hose for the caustic and slurry circuits of an alumina refinery?

Yes, and it is the reason most Jamaican enquiries reach us. Caustic liquor, heat and abrasive slurry in one circuit will destroy a general-purpose hose in weeks — a compound chosen for hydraulic oil is the wrong compound there. Tell us the concentration, the temperature and where in the circuit the assembly sits, and we specify against it and say plainly where a catalogue item is unsuitable.

Why should aluminium quick-couplings be kept out of Bayer-process lines?

Because aluminium is attacked by caustic outright, and it turns up in fittings and quick-couplings where nobody expected chemistry to matter. Hot caustic is also far more aggressive than the ambient figure a compatibility table gives. Give us the sodium hydroxide concentration and the operating temperature, not just the chemical name, and we specify tube, cover and end fittings against all three.

Our cargo is going through Kingston — will it be imported or transhipped?

That depends on where it is going, and it is worth saying which at quotation. Kingston transhipes a great deal that never enters Jamaica. If your goods are staying, the importer raises the customs declaration through Jamaica Customs before arrival; if they are staging onward, the file is documented that way from the outset rather than imported and re-exported.

Is a conformity certificate required to import industrial hose into Jamaica?

No — there is no blanket pre-shipment conformity scheme for industrial hose and fittings. The file is the customs declaration raised by the importer through Jamaica Customs, the invoice and packing list, the Dubai Chamber attested certificate of origin and the bill of lading or air waybill. For caustic and slurry duty we add a compatibility statement, and material and test certificates where the plant specification calls for them.

Can you deliver DAP to the refineries in Clarendon and at Ewarton?

Yes, on DAP terms to the plant gate — the Clarendon refinery, Ewarton in St Catherine, or the Nain site in St Elizabeth. The road leg from Kingston, or from Port Esquivel where the berth suits, is priced with the order rather than estimated. Give us the gate and the receiving contact with the enquiry and both go on the file before dispatch.

Why source alumina-plant hose from Dubai rather than Florida?

For a standard item, Florida is closer and often the right answer. What we hold is the caustic and slurry specification as stock rather than as a special order, and on a plant with a shutdown calendar that is worth more than the freight difference. A consignment planned against the outage lands with the compound, couplings and documents settled.

Should we batch our orders around the refinery shutdown calendar?

Yes. On a five-week lane, one consolidated consignment planned against the shutdown calendar lands far better than several small ones ordered as items fail: compound and coupling choices are settled once, documents are raised once, and the assemblies arrive before the outage rather than during it. Send the outage date with the line list and we work back from it.

Which Jamaican ports can you ship to besides Kingston?

Kingston is the default port of entry, with Port Esquivel and Montego Bay used where the berth suits the delivery. Port Esquivel sits close to the St Catherine and Clarendon bauxite and alumina operations; Montego Bay serves the north-west. Whichever port is chosen, the road leg to site is priced with the order on DAP terms, and the file is raised against that port.

Can you match the fittings on bauxite haul trucks and loaders exactly?

Yes. Send the existing fitting identification — thread form, seat angle and sealing method — or the machine model, and we match it, whether JIC, ORFS, BSP or metric, rather than substituting a near-equivalent. Hose is supplied to SAE J517, EN 853/856 or ISO 18752 constructions as the machine requires, and abrasion-resistant covers are worth specifying where lines rub in the bauxite pits.
