Ammonia and brass do not coexist

Copper alloys are attacked by ammonia, and brass fittings in ammonia service crack rather than corrode gracefully — stress corrosion cracking, which gives very little warning and fails suddenly. Brass is the default material for a great many couplings and adapters, so this is an easy specification to get wrong by simply not thinking about it. Steel and stainless are the answer, and the same care applies to any seal or gasket in the circuit. Where a line list mixes ammonia service with ordinary duty, say which items go where and we will separate them rather than quoting one material across the whole order.
