Product description
A shackle joins a sling, hook or chain to a lifting point and opens with a removable pin. Alloy steel.
Sizes and ratings
14 sizes, 5/16″ to 2″. Working load limit 1.2 to 55 t. Minimum breaking load 6 to 275 t. Every size has its own Indus part number in the table below, with the loads in the unit the manufacturer rates them in.
The lettered dimensions in the table refer to the dimension drawing shown with this product.
Manufacturer's data
- Drop forged / quenched and tempered.
- Rated with a 5:1 design factor between working load limit and minimum breaking load.
- Made to ASME B30.26.
Choosing a size
Choose on working load limit for the pull you will actually apply. A chain (dee) shackle takes an in-line pull; an anchor (bow) shackle accepts several slings or an angled pull. Side-loading reduces the rating, and a screw pin must be fully seated before loading.
Ordering
Quote the Indus part number from the size table, or send the size and rating you need. Each consignment ships with the manufacturer's test certificate; say on the RFQ if your site needs anything more.

Size — Nominal size as the manufacturer states it. WLL — Working load limit — the most the part may carry in service, as the manufacturer rates it. Min breaking load — Minimum breaking load. A test figure — never lift to it. A — Dimension A on the manufacturer dimension drawing. C — Dimension C on the manufacturer dimension drawing. D — Dimension D on the manufacturer dimension drawing. L — Dimension L on the manufacturer dimension drawing. N — Dimension N on the manufacturer dimension drawing. Weight — Weight as the manufacturer publishes it. Ask us for the dimension drawing if you need it stamped.
WLL is the most the part may carry in service. Proof and breaking loads are test figures — never lift to them. Each load is shown in the unit the manufacturer rates the part in, and a size ships with the manufacturer’s test certificate.

Stainless vs galvanized rigging in Gulf coastal air: what lasts, and what carries less
On the Gulf coast, zinc on galvanized rigging can be lost at up to 8 µm a year, and faster offshore. Stainless steel does not rust away, but it pits in salt air, can crack in hot chloride conditions, and is usually rated well below carbon or alloy steel of the same size. Here is how to choose.

Working load limit vs breaking strength: WLL, MBL, proof load and the factor between them
The breaking strength of a lifting component is not a number you lift to. It is the WLL multiplied by a design factor, and that factor runs from 4:1 on alloy chain to 7:1 on polyester slings. Here is how the four ratings relate, worked through with figures from our own tables.

Types of shackles: anchor vs chain, and screw pin vs bolt type vs round pin
A shackle is chosen on two decisions: the body shape, which sets the directions it can be loaded from, and the pin, which sets how securely it stays closed. Here is how anchor and chain shackles differ, when each pin type is right, and how material changes the rating at the same size.
