Grade 80 Single-Leg Chain Sling, Master Link and Sling Hook — Type SOS

Grade 80 single-leg chain sling made up with an oblong master link at the top and a sling hook with safety latch at the bottom. The chain and every fitting are Grade 80 alloy steel, quenched and tempered, and matched in size so that no component is the weak point.

What SOS means

Chain sling make-ups are named by a letter code read from the top down: S = single leg; O = oblong master link; S = sling hook with safety latch. So an SOS sling is a single leg sling with an oblong master link at the top and a sling hook with safety latch at the bottom.

Sizes and ratings

21 chain sizes, 4 mm to 50 mm. Working load limit 0.5 to 78.5 t in a straight vertical lift, at a 4:1 design factor. Used in a choke hitch the rating falls to 80% of the figure in the table. Each size has its own Indus part number below.

Choosing this make-up

The oblong master link sits on the crane hook and lets the sling hang and turn freely. A sling hook is the general-purpose end fitting: the spring latch closes the throat so the hook cannot slip off a slack lifting point.

Identification and certificate

Each sling carries a permanent tag with its serial number, chain size, grade, reach and working load limit, and ships with the manufacturer's test certificate. The rating on the tag and certificate is the one that governs the sling in service.
