About the family
Universal air hose couplings — also called Chicago, claw or crowfoot-claw couplings — are interlocking half-couplings for compressed-air lines. Both halves are the same part, so any coupling mates with any other of the same pattern: they are pushed together, twisted a quarter turn, sealed on a gasket and locked with a safety pin or clip. Sunpool supplies the American, European and Australian lug patterns, which are not interchangeable with each other, in carbon steel, brass, stainless steel and malleable iron.
What it connects to
Any two couplings of the same pattern and lug count mate with each other — that is what "universal" means. A hose-end coupling joins hose to hose; a male- or female-end coupling puts a threaded port on the run; a blank end caps an idle line; a 3-way splits one supply into two. The American, European and Australian patterns look alike but the lug geometry differs, so they will not connect to one another — order the whole line in one pattern.
Where it is used
Universal couplings are the standard hose connector on compressed-air service across construction, quarrying, shipyards and workshops — jackhammers, rock drills, air tools, sandblast pots and compressor manifolds. They are chosen where hoses are coupled and uncoupled many times a shift and a threaded connection would be too slow, and where a crew needs to make up a line without tools.
Selection and service notes
Every connection needs a gasket to seal and a safety pin or clip to stop the coupling backing off under vibration. On compressed air above roughly 7 bar a whip-check cable should also be fitted across each joint: if a coupling does part under pressure, the cable stops the hose flailing. Inspect the lugs and the gasket seat at every make-up — a worn lug is what lets a coupling release under load.
How to order
Specify (a) the size, (b) the body material if more than one is listed, and (c) any thread, tail or gasket variant on the RFQ. Indus Hydraulics quotes this range to order from Dubai; engineering will confirm the manufacturer part number against your application, and where a variant is listed as available on request we will confirm the lead time for it before you commit.
