Rating, test and flanges
- Working pressure: 5,000 psi. API 6A shell test: 10,000 psi.
- Flanged ends: API 6B flanges at this size and rating take a R-35 or RX-35 ring gasket.
- Bore: full bore — the bore matches the nominal size, so wireline tools and pigs pass through.
Reading the nameplate
- PSL (product specification level, 1 to 4) sets the inspection, testing and traceability applied. PSL 3G adds a gas test.
- PR (performance requirement) is PR1 or PR2; PR2 valves have passed the design-validation testing in API 6A.
- Material class AA to CC is general service. DD, EE, FF and HH are sour service to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156; a suffix such as -0.5 or -1.5 is the maximum H₂S partial pressure in psia, and NL means no limit.
- Temperature class letters combine: P = −20 °F to +180 °F; U = 0 °F to +250 °F. P+U covers −20 °F to +250 °F.

What do PSL and PR mean on a 3-1/8″ 5K gate valve?▾
PSL (1 to 4) is the product specification level: the inspection, testing and traceability applied during manufacture, with PSL 3G adding a gas test. PR is the performance requirement: PR2 valves have passed API 6A design-validation testing, PR1 valves have not. Specify both on the RFQ.
Which material class do I need for sour service?▾
API 6A material classes DD, EE, FF and HH are for sour service to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. The suffix gives the maximum H₂S partial pressure the valve is rated for, in psia — for example EE-0.5 or DD-NL (no limit). AA, BB and CC are general service. Choose by the H₂S partial pressure and CO₂ content of your fluid.
What ring gasket does a 3-1/8″ 5K API 6A flange use?▾
A R-35 or RX-35 ring gasket, on an API 6B flange. Order the rings with the valve if you need them.
What pressure is the valve body tested to?▾
API 6A sets the hydrostatic shell test for a 5,000 psi valve at 10,000 psi.
